Open water swimming is intimidating for some people but it doesn’t have to be to proper gear and the right training. Master the pool if you haven’t already and then try to swim near the shore. Bring someone who is excellent in the open waters so that you can feel safe.

Wear the right swimming cap for the weather. For beginners, it’s best to go in the summer when the waters are warm and inviting. Avoid the sea if the waves are harsh. Those who have a lot of experience can swim even in cold water while wearing thick open water swimming caps. These are usually made of neoprene for insulation. They may have a chin strap to secure the cap.

Most events will follow strict protocols regarding swimming in open waters so follow these for safety if you plan on joining one.
