Men of color do not lack humanity, but they try to limit the hurt they are constantly subjected to by society. That often results in anger and negative behaviors. This facade is erected to provide protection from harm. There are concerted efforts being initiated to curtail this reaction from many of the men effected by this societal issue.
The programs focus on rehumanizing men of color. In effect, introducing them to the parts of society that love them and teaching them that loving themselves means being able to be soft as well as hard. A ‘whole being’ is both.
When people cover themselves with a hard shell, it is usually to stop the pain felt by those who perceive them as the enemy or someone to fear. If a man of color internalizes this pain, much of his life will feature unexpressed pain as well as under experienced joy and happiness.
