Chronic dry eye treatment is not a one size fits all. As a matter of fact, there are several types of treatments which may be available. Lifestyle changes are often the first step in treating this condition. These changes can include but is not limited to avoiding smoke, wearing sunglasses to help protect the eyes and humidifying the home environment. When these measures are not effective, medications are usually the second line of defense. There are both prescription and non-prescription medications such as eye drops which may be used to treat dry eye. Depending on the cause and severity of the condition, there are medical procedures that may be of benefit. This is often a last resort and tried only when other options are not effective or when dry eyes are caused by structural issues. No matter the cause or severity, there are treatments available to help with chronic dry eye.
