Frisbee golf, or disc golf, is older than you might think. It was devised in Canada in the early 1900s by some students, although the sport wasn’t really widely played until the 1960s. Various separate groups of people played some form of disc golf, often throwing the frisbee at trees, lampposts and fountains as well as into marked circles and containers. 1965 saw what was probably the first organized and large competition, held in the streets of Newport Beach, California. The first world championship tournament was hosted by the PDGA (Professional Disc Golf Association) in 1982, and today the sport is considered to be one of the fastest growing in the US. There are estimated to be around 7,000 official courses around the world, and around 53,000 registered players in the US. Perhaps part of its appeal is that it’s easier to play then actual golf!
