Cots for babies must have a depth that leaves at least 15 cm, if not more, between the top of the mattress and the top of the sides of the cot. Any bars should be vertical and not horizontal as babies can other wise use the bars like a ladder, as they grow older. Bars must be at a distance of 6.5 cm so that the baby will not get stuck in them. Bars should be on all sides of the cot as it makes for better air circulation.
The mattress in the cot must be firm and should fit snugly into the cot. Safe sleeping in cots for babies are those where there is no gap between the mattress and the side of the cot. Place the cot where the temperature is constant and not near a window that lets in the sun, or near to a radiator.
Make the baby sleep on its back, and never leave soft toys or other things in the cot, while the bay is sleeping.
