Breathwork essentially is the use of breathing techniques or exercises that are used by people for the improvement of the physical, mental and spiritual well-being. During the practice of breathwork techniques the normal breathing pattern that is normally involuntary, is changed.
Breathwork also acts as a therapy that promotes relaxation and gives an energetic feeling. In the practice of these techniques, breathing is practised systematically and consciously. The practice of breathwork leads to boosting of immunity, helps to heal emotions, pain, and trauma, can help in positive self-development, the developing of life skills, increased self-awareness, and can enrich creativity. Breathwork can also help to manage anger issues, chronic pain, depression, anxiety, grief, and the emotional effects of illness.
There are many different types of techniques practised in breathwork that include diaphragmatic breathing, box breathing, pursed-lip breathing, alternate nostril breathing, and the 4-7-8 method of breathing.
