A sign language interpreter for police is required in several situations. Some cases where a sign language interpreter is needed are criminal defense, the court system, and various legal proceedings. Police departments also use sign language interpreters to communicate with deaf and hard of hearing persons. Some police officers have even learned to read lips and speak with the deaf and hard of hearing, using sign language interpreters. These officers are often the first to encounter deaf or hard of hearing people who may need their help.
In some cases, police officers have to translate between American Sign Language (ASL) and English. This has become very common in many police forces. There are also many instances in which deaf or hard hearing individuals will need to be referred to another agency due to language barriers. Sometimes, in these situations, a sign language interpreter must bridge the communication gap between the deaf or hard of hearing individuals and their legal representatives.
