A lot of people have tried to get into the coffee business on a retail level. The ones who succeed generally learn one hard lesson quickly and then do something about it.
What they discover is that there is a hard cap on how much they can charge their customers. Considering that they are in competition with at least one huge international chain, if not more than one, this puts the squeeze on their profitability right from the start.
The only way to increase profitability is to sell more coffee or to cut costs on the coffee you already sell, preferably both. Eliminating middle men is the only way to improve your profit per cup. Going to wholesale coffee suppliers and buying in bulk allows you to drop your overhead considerably. Like anything else, there is a learning curve involved, but it is the only way to stay alive in a very competitive business.
