A network security specialist is tasked with protecting a computer network from unauthorized access, theft of data on the network and other security threats.

They typically monitor network activity to identify any possible security breaches and take measures to address any threats that are identified. They also analyze potential security risks and develop risk management plans to mitigate these risks. Additional duties may include developing and testing security software deployment tools, maintaining firewall settings and operating and managing intrusion detection systems.

Some network security specialists may also be required to research and evaluate new security measures and implement them. This can include installing computer security software, performing regular security audits, providing security status reports, educating users on computer security, writing and updating security procedures for users, assisting in disaster recovery and risk management planning and researching cybercrimes and the latest threats in network security.
