Bone density can be an important indication of overall bone health. Also referred to as bone mineral density, (BMD), low levels can be indicative of disorders such as osteoporosis. To put it simply, those with normal levels or with “dense” bones, have a lower likelihood of developing osteoporosis. Those who have low levels are more likely to suffer from or be on the path to develop it. There are a variety of tests that are available to check for low levels, with the majority being non-invasive. In some cases, the tests may be reserved for those considered higher risk, such as those who are advancing in age or have some signs and symptoms that changes within the skeletal system are occurring. BMD levels remain one of the most accurate ways to determine one’s risk and prevent further damage to bone.
