With the use of computers and internet technology touching almost every aspect of our lives, there is also a corresponding increase in the number of crimes that are committed using computer technology or that involve the theft of digital data.

Computer forensics technology is a branch of forensic science that searches for evidence contained in computers and their digital storage media; its aim is to identify, recover, preserve and analyze digital media to produce evidence that is forensically sound and can then be used in criminal or civil legal proceedings against criminals or other bad actors.

The data gathered is subjected to the same principles and techniques that apply for other forensic evidence but also includes additional methods to provide a legal audit trail for digital computer evidence. It has been used in recent high profile hacking cases successfully and is becoming widely accepted in both US and EU court systems.
